Lucas de Gálvez Market is a great place to explore when visiting Merida. It is a must if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture. Try local fruits and the street food it's amazing! Support local farmers and local economy.

Great place to spend a few hours immersed in authentic Mexican everyday life. No tourist traps here just cheap (and inexpensive) merchandise, fresh produce, and dozens of cheap eats places that serve the usual, and some unusual Mexican dishes. A side of Mexico that you are not likely to see any other place. Every town or city we visit, Mercado principal or (sometimes called municipal) is on our must visit list.

Enormous central market. Very local so not many English speakers. Crowded but safe. Locals come to buy the freshest fruit, vegetables and spices. There are multiple sections, cookware, produce, butchers and seafood with little street food stands (though I would take care regarding the hygiene with the cooking stalls but their fresh produce is awesome). The best part is the fresh vegetable section. Some of the wet market sections can be a bit intimidating though.

Glad we went and an interesting place to visit but would never trust to eat there. Definitely not a clean place.
