It's a place full of history before becoming an archive it was a penitentiary so it's full of interesting stories. And now there are a lot of historic documents you can see, from photos to the firsts flags of Mexico

Impressive structure. Perhaps not as interesting to someone who isn't a historian interested in the documents it contains. Staff are friendly. I was there for research, but I believe they give guided visits as well to people who just want to see it. It's a bit outside of the main attractions in Mexico city.

I worked in the AGN in the 1970s and again in the 1980s. I visited occasionally after then. I don't think I could have written any of the work I did without access to the AGN, but the current arrangements seem intended to prevent serious scholars from doing much of anything, especially exploring the largely neglected fiscal and financial holdings of the colonial period and nineteenth century. Access is difficult, and on my last trip, I was unable to consult a single document. The AGN is open scandal among working historians.

A really interesting tour about the history of Mexico's prison system.
