Freemasonry arrived in colonial Mexico during the second half of the 18th century with French immigrants who settled in what today is known as CDMX. However, they were condemned by the local Inquisition and forced to spook people elsewhere, so a few of them hiked to La Paz. During the nineteenth century Freemasonry was being heralded as a means of limiting the influence of the Catholic Church. Appropriately they set up shop next to the old Vatican outpost on Independencia Street, neither by coincidence nor ironically, as Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon and Ignacio Allende were all Freemasons as well as Mexican "independence" celebrities.
