The Institute of Investigations in Materials, IIM, is an academic entity of the National Autonomous University of Mexico that belongs to the Subsystem of Scientific Research.    The origins of the Institute go back to 1967, when the Materials Center was created on February 1st and it is installed on the 11th floor of the old Science Tower. In 1969, his research areas were expanded, his name was changed to Materials Research Center and he moved to his current facilities, in the exterior circuit. The advances achieved by its academic staff make that on November 21, 1979 become the current Institute of Research in Materials, IIM, which adopted an academic organization of 4 departments: Metallic Materials and Ceramics, Polymers, Materials Physics to Low Temperatures and Solar Energy. Subsequently, in 1985, the Department of Solar Energy was transformed into a Solar Energy Laboratory and moved to Temixco, Morelos. As of November 13, 1996, by agreement of the University Council, the Solar Energy Laboratory was transformed into the Energy Research Center, with which the Materials Research Institute was academically organized in three departments: Metallic and Ceramics, Polymers and Solid State and Cryogenics.  In 2000, the Institute had three academic departments: Solid State and Cryogenics, Metallic and Ceramic Materials, and Polymers and in 2001, the Department of Rheology was formed. As of December 6, 2002, with the approval of the new internal regulations by the Technical Council for Scientific Research, the IIM reorganized its departments and updated their names:    Condensed Matter and Cryogenics, Metallic and Ceramic Materials, Polymers, Rheology and Mechanics of Materials    On February 27, 2014 the new internal regulations of the institute were approved by the CTIC, approving the creation of the Morelía Unit
